Introduction to Digital Art

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is a digital artist who makes a lot of large-scale interactive installation pieces. He exhibits work both in galleries and in public areas. In this short paper I will give a little bit of background on Hemmer and talk about how the fact that his work is in public areas, interactive, and large scale makes him such a successful artist.

Hemmer was born in Mexico City and went to school at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada where he received a bachelor in science for physical chemistry. He has been exhibiting his artwork since the early 90’s up until the present and has received several awards for his work. He has also written several texts. Hemmer’s installations aim to provide “temporary antimonuments for alien agency”.

There are many factures that make Hemmer so successful at what he does, such as that he works large scale, in public places, and his pieces are interactive. The fact that most of pieces are out in public places really help Hemmer because it gets his art out there where people easily can see it. You don’t have to go to an art museum or a gallery to experience his work, you might just be walking around and stumble across it. He has had public projects all over the world including Madison Square Park in New York City, Moscow, a power plant in Toronto, the UK, Mexico City and a lot more places. One of biggest reasons that Hemmer’s art is successful is because almost all of it is interactive, so it involves the viewer. You can’t view his work without becoming a part of the piece. Because of this it makes his work more enjoyable. I know when I visit an art museum or a gallery I almost always enjoy the interactive pieces and seeing how my input affects the piece. Although Hemmer does have some strong content in some of his pieces, because of the fact that they are interactive the content is as important and is sometime lost because the viewers don’t necessarily have to pay as much attention to it and can just enjoy becoming part of the piece themselves. So I guess if you think of it like this, the viewer themselves become part of the content of the work. People are also intrigued by his work because of the size. His work in public areas is pretty much always very large and he has projection pieces that take up the whole sides of buildings. Because of this a lot of people can be involved with his pieces at once which allows more people to see and enjoy his work at the same time.

Analyze an Add

I chose to analyze this add because it is similar to the poster i did for our first project. It is a flyer for a bike race. I feel the flyer is successful because it is very simple and i feel the message of it is very clear. My eye is lead around by the repetition of the yellow text on the black and white photo. All in all this flyer was simple and strait forward but successful because of it.

The Last Project

For this project i wanted to do something musical instead of a video so i chose to work in garage band. i pulled some audio from an interview i found on you tube and used some drum loops from garage band and then recorded the rest myself. one problem i had was trying to actually make it a digital art project instead of just a music project and in the end i think it still came out as more of a music project. anyways here it is:

For this project i chose to create a bike race poster. I mostly used photoshop and i did a little bit in illustrator which i haven’t used either of the programs before now so it took me a while just to figure out how they worked. Once i did i had some ideas that i played around with until this is what i got.
